Lip Service Costume Packaging

January 29, 2010

Lip Service is expanding their collection to include a line of packaged costumes. With a major costume trade show right around the corner, they needed to create package insert cards immediately but not have them them looked rushed. We received photos in two main sets; the first just over a week before the print deadline and the second a few days before the last day we could have finished insert cards for the show. Though there was a tight deadline, there was still a lot of retouching and image work to create just the right image to take to market. In adddition to the graphic design and photo retouching and editing, I also named many of the costumes and contributed to some of the descriptive copy.

Here are a few samples of the completed cards.

Body Reshaping and Slimming

Our recent Lip Service costume packaging project presented quite a few challenges. Beside a rather insane time-frame to complete printing in time for a major trade show, there were a lot of photo editing and retouching issues to address in virtually all of the photos. Sometimes a model is the perfect type with the ideal look for a garment but is just not the sample size. In this case, the designers had an adorable model with the right sweet retro pin-up looks. The challenge was that she was not quite the right fit for the dress, causing unattractive overspill as her chest was much too big for the petite cups of the garment, and her shorter height created the look of being chunkier, especially in the arms and thighs.

This was, by far, the most painstaking retouching of the project because it involved a tremendous amount of creating new bits of model where there were none and naturally reshaping without distorting the garment. I redrew more forearm where they had been covered by dress fabric, the same at the upper arms where the dress buckled outward. Then, I rehaped her middle and reshaded for a natural look. Next, I slimmed the arms from inside and outside and slimmed in the chest for a slimmer line with redrawing and reshading. Last, I brought in the thighs from inside and outside and recreated the tulle underskirt.

Garment Rebuild and Piercing Removal

Our recent Lip Service costume packaging project presented quite a few challenges. Beside a rather insane time-frame to complete printing in time for a major trade show, there were a lot of photo editing and retouching issues to address in virtually all of the photos. One of the only drawbacks to having great alt models to model your new lines is that sometimes they have extras like tattoos or piercings that might not go over in mainstream markets. When the extra in question is a big and rather prominent nose piercing, there is not a lot of working around it to try to reduce impact. In this sample, there was also the added challenge of the skirt not quite fitting correctly on the model and pulling the pleated details with contrast inserts into an unattractive shape.

Here, I rebuilt the model’s nose where the piercing had been to create a more mainstream look. The skirt was rebuilt, along with contrast inserts, to give a more natural line and smooth out the waistline. In addition, themed insignias were added to the model’s kneesocks, expression wrinkles were softened, and skin tones on her belly evened out.

Tattoo & Wrinkle Removal

Our recent Lip Service costume packaging project presented quite a few challenges. Beside a rather insane time-frame to complete printing in time for a major trade show, there were a lot of photo editing and retouching issues to address in virtually all of the photos. When you have a deep and diverse list of great alt models, it’s a shame not to call them for a new photo shoot. Of course, most alt models have a wicked collection of ink all over their bodies which does not play as well for packaging of garments being marketed to mainstream markets.

One of the most consistent retouching tasks in this project was tattoo removal and lots of it. This is one example, chosen principally because the image includes other common retouching requests, removing skin folds and wrinkles and (there’s no way to say this gently) getting rid of visible nipples. There was also a bit of rumpling in the skirt to address, as well as coloring the pitchfork to coordinate with the color of the dress.

Garment Shaping/Shine

Our recent Lip Service costume packaging project presented quite a few challenges. Beside a rather insane time-frame to complete printing in time for a major trade show, there were a lot of photo editing and retouching issues to address in virtually all of the photos. Sometimes a garment simply will not behave and lay properly, no matter how hard you try to adjust it. Add the factor of stiffer, shiny material such as vinyl and any awkward lay of the garment is intensified. In this specific case, the vinyl blouse refused to lay correctly over the model’s strapless brassiere, as well as rumpling obviously in several places. The skirt also created stubborn textures against the model.

The challenge in this photo was to rebuild the top to create a clean line at the chest, remove or reduce rumples and folding of the vinyl, and still retain the unique shine, feel, and texture of vinyl. There was also a slight modification requested by the designers to adjust the model’s thighs for a cleaner, slimmer line.

Fabric

Our recent Lip Service costume packaging project presented quite a few challenges. Beside a rather insane time-frame to complete printing in time for a major trade show, there were a lot of photo editing and retouching issues to address in virtually all of the photos. One of the constants one notes in alt models is that they tend to not like to stand straight and merely allow the clothes to drape on their frames. This, of course, presents an interesting textural landscape on fabrics; as the body bends and arcs, the fabric will needfully adjust creating deep rumples and folds. The designers were, rightfully, concerned about the overall impression that might be made by presenting rumpled costumes.

That’s where I come in.

This is one of the more vivid examples of fabric texture and folding, where folds and buckling were so extreme, virtually the entire garment needed to be rebuilt.

Various

Our recent Lip Service costume packaging project presented quite a few challenges. Beside a rather insane time-frame to complete printing in time for a major trade show, there were a lot of photo editing and retouching issues to address in virtually all of the photos. The more detailed posts show the more extensive and large-scale edits. Here are some examples of general retouching of various issues and areas, showing how a few nuanced changes can make a lof of difference in the finished image.
